Heart Island – “My Interrupted Mind”

heart island

Whitney Gould, a part of the fab Seattle electronic outfit SPORTS, has been soloing it for a little bit now under the moniker Heart Island.  The majority of the work he’s done with it has been instrumental electronics and remixes, but he just emailed me a new track featuring his vocals as well….which are quite good.  ”My Interrupted Mind” is a drifting brooding synth piece – check it:

Seattle’s SPORTS and their debut LP have received a ridiculous amount of stereo play from me…seriously…I think I’m driving my fam up the wall with it.  Oh well….looks like I’m going to have another addition to it.  The fine folks over at Crash Symbols came calling a few days ago asking if I’d like to premiere this new SPORTS rework/cover of The Cyclist’s “CAN”.  There’s a remix EP soon to be released and this doozy is on it.  SPORTS keep the track in it’s dark electronic homeland, but remodel it a bit with a heavy dose of smooth smooth smooth “Vitamin C”.  Take a listen:

And of course the original is pretty badass as well:

Pick up The Cyclist’s Bending Brass over at Crash Symbols and keep your eyes peeled for a remix EP come November.  Oh and if you haven’t grabbed ahold of SPORTS’ S/T debut LP – DO IT!

SPORTS

Over the last half a year Seattle’s SPORTS has put out sweet electronic swoon after sweet electronic swoon.  Each song has received an abundant amount of play from me.  Not surprisingly, their debut S/T LP, which was released for pay-what-you-want (digitally) and via cassette (on Crash Symbols) a few days ago via bandcamp, has melted my ears in an equally impressive way.  The LP consists of a lot of previously released tracks – but remastered and sounding much richer and bold.  There’s a comparison wanting to come out about this band…they do sound like someone, but either I’m too daft to figure that out or I just want to focus on SPORTS’ tunes as opposed to another’s.  This music hits hard (at least as hard as vibrant/moody electronicish pop can hit) straight to the heart recalling much of my 80s new wave heritage, but, of course, playing it in their own unique modern style.

New SPORTS / James and Evander Split EP

Back in October I was blown away with Seattle trio SPORTS.  The other day the group sent over news of their split EP with Oakland’s James & Evander.  Each has a single and a remix of the others track.  Pretty sweet stuff.  Get the full thing on their bandcamp for free.

Choice Compilation: Dope Mountain Fuck

Dope Mountain Fuck

I found myself continually going back to a seriously good compilation put together by GETOFFTHECOAST (Jheri Evans) and Dwight Pavlovic of Royal Rhino Flying Records (and their new label Crash Symbols) called Dope Mountain Fuck. Its full of fuzzed out, blissed out, blessed out, fleshed out, flushed out, tripped out, tapped out tunes from the likes of Wish, Bummer Sanders, Fox Hands, The Frushtucks, Monster Rally, Mellows, Hear Hums, School Knights, Kohwi, Mutual Benefit, Gay Boiz, SPORTS, Pariah Carey, Pregnant, Foot Village, D/R/U/G/S, Great Beer, Closed Cassette, and Beggars in a New Land. Here’s two of my current faves:

mp3: SPORTS – Prizefighter (demo)

A perfect storm of weathered space jams splitting the atoms of electronics and fusing them back with gold.

They’ve put together a bandcamp page as well which features a brand new track “EVERY WORLD IS A WORLD OF YOUR OWN” paired with “To Catch A Thief”.  Its worth the download.
