Secret Mountains – “Coasting”

secret mountains

There’s a lot of words I could use to describe Baltimore’s Secret Mountains (rock, psychedlic, dreamy) but intense seems to be the one I usually drift to.  On the upcoming debut LP, Rainer, their music hits a downpour of emotional intensity that I happily stroll through.  The beauty is that they don’t achieve this through the ordinary standards – loud guitars, build-ups, kicked out drums – they bring it on through finely tuned arrangements that balance every element.  The result is an ocean of fluxating mood…and intensity.  ”Coasting”, the first single, is a prime example of that…and a song that I’ve played a bit too many times today.

Rainer comes out on February 26th via Friends Records. You can pre-order it here.

Secret Mountains, Other Colors, SoftSpot & Holy Ghost Party at the Windup Space 12/15

Secret Mountains

Tomorrow night there’s a pretty rad show going down at Baltimore’s Windup Space.  One of my faves, Secret Mountains, is bringing their force to North Ave.  Rumor has it, they have an album due out early next year and sometime very soon we’ll be hearing some new sounds from them. Also on the bill is Bmore’s Other Colors and Holy Ghost Party (both of which have some tremendous releases out on Gen Pop) and Brooklyn’s SoftSpot. RSVP here. See you there?

Tonight in Bmore: Gem Club, Holy Spirits, Secret Mountains, Dark Dark Dark, Soft Cat, and more

Two friggin awesome shows tonight in this charming city.  Honestly its a complete toss up for which one to go to.  On one hand the friggin’ amazing Holy Spirits, Gem Club, Soft Cat, and Winks play the Metro Gallery.  WTF.  Amazing, right.  On the other hand Dark Dark Dark, Secret Mountains, and Pillars & Tongues play the Golden West Cafe.  Dammit!  ALSO A SWEET SHOW.  The only solution is to late fate decide Two Face-style and flip a coin.  I call heads…no wait tails…no…dammit.

Looking for music to desaturate or dry off to?  Then stay clear of The Metro Gallery tonight.  The sounds pouring from that fine establishment will surely drench your mind and ease the soul.  Bmore Musically Informed presents the lush and loud variety of Secret Mountains with two other faves of mine – Soft Cat and Arches.  You should friggin’ go.  Here’s the FB Event page…and here’s some audio:

Denny Bowen of Double Dagger, Dan Frome of Chrome Dome fame, John Jones of Each Othrs and Bret Lanahan of Like Patterns) all collide their sonic booms into the small confines of the Current Space.  $5 – be there.
