The Run Down – Sunday May 11, 2008

Well if you’re going to the Radiohead show tonight with Liars at Nissan Pavillion, then you pretty much trump all the other shows in the are. If you’re not going, why not slow down and chill with Ladyhawke and Neva Dinova at DC9. Sounds like a plan.

Sunday Buffet

Another Sunday is upon us, and though the Radiohead show tonight is in many peoples minds, why not take some time to deviate and explore a bit with a sampling of tasty music treats from around the globe.

Motocade is four piece band from New Zealand that plays an honest indie type of rock that makes me laugh and cry at the same time. Strange as that may sound, it’s true…as is this track.

Tim Fite is a Brooklyn musician that knows no boundaries. Sometimes dabbling in samples and hip hop, while the other times he’s strumming a lil geetar (like a fave of mine Buck 65). He has a new LP, Fair Ain’t Fair, due out on Anti- that really delves into his emotional folkish dark side.

An open letter to Radiohead

Dear Radiohead,

I can not wait to see your performance at Nissan Pavilion in Virginia on Sunday May 11, 2008. The excitement building is almost more then I can handle. I do have a few requests. First, could you please just remove Liars from the bill as your opener. It’s nothing against them; Its just that I’d rather keep my musical palate clean before your amazing live show.

Second, if you would be so kind as to play any of the following songs, I would then be able to allow my friend and fellow blogger JB to continue living. Thank you for your consideration. And if you would like, please feel free to play all three.

Thanks a bunch,

The Run Down – Saturday May 10, 2008

Holy cow! Tonight! Metro Gallery has the CD release for Thrushes with Dead Leaf Echo, Sonadors, and Blonde Acid Cult playing too. Also in Baltimore, The Roots are playing the Pier Six Pavillion with Erykah Badu. In DC the Velvet Lounge has a great early show (2pm) with Appomattox, Imperial China, Len Bias, The prisoner’s Dilemma, and Moscow Telephone, but they also have a great late show with New york times, Nerd Parade, and Koko. As for major acts, you can’t get much bigger than Kanye West who is playing Missan Pavillion with Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, and N.E.R.D.. Have a good time!

Taking The Fairlane Parkway

I’m a fairly large fan of the American Analog Set. I’m quite fond of their self labeled “neo-punk” sound (since punk was supposed to be defying the normal music of that time which was softer…now everything is louder…so the new punk should be softer…right?). DC’s The Fairlane Parkway are riding in this neo-punk soft sound boat too…and I like it. They have the duo of Zachary Okun and Raj Gadhia, the soft keys, the soft voice, and the tender emotions that some could even compare to Nick Drake. Mesmerizing instruments drift behind the drums and vocals…sending me down a stream of light indie pop that I’ll never return from…nor do I want to…until it ends. The Kora Records will be releasing their new LP, A Memory Of Open Spaces, on May 26th. So why not pick it up and explore?

Blueprint Vs. Funkadelic

So people seem to be in a giving mood these days.  Maybe it’s Mother’s Day.  Maybe it’s the warm weather.  The good thing is that most of it’s good.  It’s rare that I come across hip hop that really gets me going.  Cadence Weapon, most things produced by Peanut Butter Wolf, Del, Krs-One, sometimes Kanye, sometimes Lupe, The Roots, Edan, and of course the fabulous duo of RJD2 and Blueprint–Soul Position.  Last time Soul Position was touring, they stopped at Sonar in Baltimore.  It was super fantastic.  Blueprint talked about having some off time to work on some solo projects as did RJ.  Well RJD2 did his thing, but what happened to Blueprint?  Well he’s just released a free EP, Blueprint vs. Funkadelic and it’s just as the title states.  Basically Blueprint samples and distorts some classic Funkadelic tracks and tears it up over top of them.  He’s truly amazing in his delivery and everyone who’s a fan of hip hop should go grab this.  It’s up for free download here or if you want one of the limited 500 copies of the disc with a free poster, pick it up here.
