Merriweather Post Pavilion has one super sweet event tonight with R.E.M., The National, and Modest Mouse.  If you can’t make that one then drive south a bit to check three great shows in DC.  The 9:30 club has the Breeders and the Montana Boys.  The Black Cat has Love Is All and Videohippos.  Finally the Rock and Roll Hotel has De Novo Dahl, Pash, Caroline Liar, and Fever.  Enjoy!  Photo by Aaron Farrington

A Ticket On The Cotton Jones Basket Ride

Okay…here’s some folk drenched Doors grooves slowly paddling down the stream we once knew as Page France. Lead Singer of Page France, Michael Nau, has rescheduled the first LP from his new endeavor, The Cotton Jones Basket Ride, to put out a series of EPs through Quite Scientific Records. This Limited release series has just been continued with The Archery EP which takes you back to a smoke filled club with lava lamps and slow organs making you sway back on your heels before opening your eyes to a Dylan drawl that sets your mind on fire. Yeah. There’s only a run of 500 copies, so if you can snag it, please do so. They’re also on a June tour so you might want to stop by and see what’s new with Nau. Check the dates here.

Toofer Toosday – Crooked Looks & CHAINGANG

Crooked Looks is a recently formed trio from Brooklyn (one via Philly).  They have an EP coming out in July and it seems to be taking my ipod by storm.  Like fellow NYCers, LCD Soundsystem, they have a booming rhythm bass that obliterates your legs and mind until you can’t help but move.  On top of this rough dance rock groove is street level vocals that let you sing along with ease.

CHAINGANG is dance punk indie rock from down under that soars high and dives down into your limbs, making them do all sorts of crazy things (dangerous while driving).  Hayley’s lead vocals are powerful and unique (as if Bjork became a thrasher…or Siouxsie…yeah that’s the ticket).  I’ve only been able to put my hands on some demos, but CHAINGANG is definitely worth a listen, a show, and an album watch.  photo by luke austin

The Run Down – Monday June 9, 2008

Merriweather Post Pavilion has a super sweet show with Death Cab For Cutie and Rogue Wave, so if you can make it to Columbia, MD through the sweltering heat, then you might want to go.  Or if your looking for some cooler indoor events, why not check out Pete Yorko & the One Man Music Band at the Ottobar with Oakley Hall and Snowmen.  Finally in DC tonight the Rock and Roll Hotel has Mudhoney, The Cynics and The Points.
