Young Heel – Love You Down (Ready For The World Cover)

Young Heel

Classic R&B covers sometimes get lost in the shuffle, but Young Heel’s stellar slow jam rework of “The” classic Ready For The World track “Love You Down” is something to immediately slide into that Valentine’s Day mixtape you’ve begun working on for that special someone.  Check it:

Kisses – Johnny and Mary (Robert Palmer Cover) (mp3)

kisses

Pitchfork just premiered a new cover of Robert Palmer from Kisses.  I always seem to forget how much I enjoy Robert Palmer tunes. Judging from this song I apparently need to investigate his earlier stuff.  I never forget how much I enjoy Kisses tunes.  I would have never paired the two without hearing this, but they actually have some common ground.  Take a listen:

Kisses are working on the follow up LP to the phenomenal The Heart Of The Nightlife.  Stay tuned.

Premiere: SPORTS – Vitamin C (The Cyclist Cover/Rework) (mp3)

CAN_SPORTS_Web

Seattle’s SPORTS and their debut LP have received a ridiculous amount of stereo play from me…seriously…I think I’m driving my fam up the wall with it.  Oh well….looks like I’m going to have another addition to it.  The fine folks over at Crash Symbols came calling a few days ago asking if I’d like to premiere this new SPORTS rework/cover of The Cyclist’s “CAN”.  There’s a remix EP soon to be released and this doozy is on it.  SPORTS keep the track in it’s dark electronic homeland, but remodel it a bit with a heavy dose of smooth smooth smooth “Vitamin C”.  Take a listen:

And of course the original is pretty badass as well:

Pick up The Cyclist’s Bending Brass over at Crash Symbols and keep your eyes peeled for a remix EP come November.  Oh and if you haven’t grabbed ahold of SPORTS’ S/T debut LP – DO IT!

PREMIERE: Total Warr – Jamie (Weezer Cover)

total warr

I was just listening to Weezer’s Pinkerton yesterday thinking “Boy they don’t make rock like this anymore do they?”  Then out of the clouds and into my inbox drops Total Warr‘s sweet beach club electronic pop cover of Weezer’s “Jamie” .  Whoa whoa whoa…wait a second.  I’m an old school Weezer fan here (when I say old school – I’m talking first two albums…and the green album too… I guess) and “Jamie” is one of my ALL TIME faves.  I bought the Mallrats Soundtrack specifically for that song.  But this cover works.  I dig it.  Here it is:

Also if you haven’t had a chance to check out Total Warr’s sweet EP Please Never Come Back Again, do so.

Suggested Listening: Headed For The Ditch – A Tribute To Neil Young

Headed For The Ditch

I’ve never been a big “covers” guy.  I don’t know why, that’s just how I’m wired I guess.  Especially when it comes to two people – Bob Dylan and Neil Young.  In my humble opinion, folks should just stay away from those dudes and their fine fine tunes.  Well a new Neil Young tribute album has me contemplating a change in that philosophy.  Universal Electricity has put together one hell of a tribute album to Neil Young titled Headed For The Ditch which can be downloaded for free here.  Its filled with a WIDE variety of sound interpretations of Young’s work by the gamut of killer new bands including Teen Daze, Emily Reo, Foxes In Fictions, Teen Daze, Vacation, Breakfast In Fur, and Ghost Animal.  Here’s two of my faves:

A Handful Of Covers by Teen Daze, Young Man, and Millionyoung

I rarely, and when I say I mean like once a year, post covers on this blog.  Don’t know why really, I just haven’t.  Blogs like IGIF seem to have it “covered”.  That being said, when some of my favorite new artists start getting into the mix, its hard to hold back.  Check them:

Just Listen: The Selfish Replicators – The White Lady Loves You More (Elliott Smith Cover) (mp3)

the selfish replicators

The mysterious band The Selfish Replicators, who seem to have no information about them anywhere, have emerged again.  This time they (or possibly he/she) sent over a new track simply stating:

Hello there,

A Selfish cover for you.

cheers

And then this track, a pretty solid cover of Elliott Smith.
